o   MBBR (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor)

 

MBBR technology uses thousands of polyethylene biofilm carriers operating in mixed motion in a blower-aerated wastewater treatment tank under PLC control. Each biocarrier acts as a carrier bed to support the growth and reproduction of heterotrophic and autotrophic bacteria in wastewater. This high density bacterial population provides a high rate of biodegradation within the system while at the same time providing process reliability and ease of use.

 

Considering the operation and maintenance costs, MBBR is very efficient in terms of process selection. It is preferred in many different industrial applications and some of the advantages of the process are as follows.

 

·         Compact: MBBR is a great option for space-constrained facilities because it typically takes up much less space than other systems. MBBR aeration tank can effectively purify the same amount of water as a larger tank used for a more traditional process. In particular, it offers this advantage due to the maximum surface area the media provides for biofilm growth.

The maintenance of the MBBR system should be done as written in the operating maintenance manual. MBBR requires qualified personnel for routine monitoring of blower and pump operation. MBBR technology has a self-maintenance mechanism for biofilm level.

The membrane bioreactor is based on a combination of traditional activated sludge and biofilm media. The comparison between MBR and MBBR can be made using the following key criteria:

 

·         MBR's initial investment cost is higher than MBBR.

·         Input TDS value is higher in MBR technology compared to MBBR process.

·         MBBR system does not require chemicals to function like MBR system.

·         MBR process is more difficult to operate than MBBR process.

·         MBR process requires circulation pump and compressor but it is not needed in MBBR.

·         Both systems require blower.

·         In case of power failure, MBR maximum standby time can last up to 24 hours, MBBR is up to 10 hours, then bacteria forms bio-cake form.

·         MBR is better than MBBR at removing complex or toxic substances.

·         MBR treated water quality is superior, but MBBR is suitable for garden irrigation purposes only.
